The Art of Self Care – Disconnecting from the World and Reconnecting with Ourselves

Although we’ve spent a lot more time at home this past year, that doesn’t necessarily mean we have had more time for ourselves. Working from home and home schooling have made it difficult to switch off as we more easily lose track of time. Reliance on smart devices to connect with friends, colleagues and family have affected our sleep patterns and mental health.

Why Self Care is so Important

Self-care is vital not only for our mental health but for our physical health too. High levels of stress are proven to reduce immunity which leaves us vulnerable to infections. In addition, as we become more stressed and tired, our ability to care for others is reduced and our work suffers. Without stepping back and taking a break from it all, we can quickly become burned out and run down. However, some simple tips are all we need to help us to restore our energy!

Schedule Time for You

We’re happy to block time in our diary for events and play dates, but our self-care needs to be scheduled too! Make sure when you’re planning your month, you add spaces for some much needed “me time”. These appointments with yourself are non-negotiable and you aren’t allowed to cancel no matter what!

Shake up your Sleep Routine!

Sleep is one of the most important things to restore mind body and soul. If you’re struggling to get some shut eye, a change in your routine can make all the difference:

  • Indulge in a relaxing bath once the day is done
  • Switch off your phone at least two hours before bed
  • Listen to relaxing music to get into the sleep zone
  • Treat yourself to new cozy bedding and pajamas, a fresh clean bed always guarantees a great night’s sleep!
  • De clutter your room to have a calm space to relax in

Spend Time with Nature

The great outdoors is one of the greatest remedies when we’re feeling stale and demotivated. Now that restrictions are being lifted and travel is starting to reopen, plans some trips to get you away from the modern world and technology, and back to simpler times. Camping, hiking, a trip to the beach are all awesome self-care activities. Our favorite outdoor activity for resetting our perspectives and expectations of ourselves is stargazing! It really helps us to refocus our priorities when we remember just how big the universe is!

Make Healthier Food Choices

Spending time to cook ourselves something good and healthy to eat nourishes our body and soul. Learning new kitchen skills, and taking time out to focus on just one activity instead of the million things in our head is a welcome break from the daily grind. As you sit with your home made meal take time to enjoy your efforts. It’s too easy to fall into bad eating habits with a busy life, but remember we are what we eat! Small changes to your diet can make a huge difference to energy levels and general wellbeing!

Don’t forget, we can’t help others if we can’t help ourselves. Your number one priority should be you, only then you are able to give 100% to your family, friends and work! It’s ok to say no sometimes if you feel that things are getting too much. Step back, take time for yourself, then you can take on anything life throws at you!
