Face Masks and Flights – Combating Skin Problems when Flying!

Flying is notorious for causing skin issues due to the extremely dry air and being in close proximity to so many people. Now that wearing a face mask is sensible when in enclosed spaces for our safety and that of others, we need to take even more care of our skin when traveling. Here are our top tops for avoiding the dreaded ‘maskne’ during your travels:

Hydrate from the Inside

One of the best things you can do before, during and after your flight is hydrate! Not only will it help to combat skin problems, but it can help with bloating too.  Avoid caffeine and alcohol which can dehydrate you even more quickly in flight. Drink plenty of water, add electrolytes to help hydrate faster and drink calming teas such as peppermint and chamomile. If you do decide to treat yourself to an in-flight glass of wine, make sure you chase it with plenty of water to counteract the dehydrating effects.

Change Your Mask Regularly

Wearing your mask for a lengthy period can cause buildup of sweat, bacteria and moisture which in combination is bad news for skin. It’s easy to carry extra masks in your hand luggage or handbag to change your mask during your journey, then they can be easily washed and dried at your destination. Changing after boarding, eating and after landing can help to keep the area clean.

Keep it Natural

Avoid clogged pores by keeping your makeup light and natural, or better yet don’t use any! Your skin will be subjected to lots of dirt and toxins n the airport and during the flight, so keep it simple with just a light moisturizer and additional serum. The more your skin can breathe during travel the less likely you’ll have problems, keep the full face palette for your destination!

Thoroughly Cleanse at Your Destination

Once you’ve checked into your hotel, thoroughly cleanse the dirt and grime and apply moisturizer before heading out to explore. While it can be tempting to ditch the bags and hit the bar, your skin is holding all of the nasty bacteria you picked up from the plane! Spending a little time to clean off your travels can stop a break out in its tracks!

Now your skin is ready to fly! Happy traveling!
