November is Here and Welcome to National Healthy Skin Month!
Every year in the US November is Healthy Skin month, focusing on how to keep skin healthy and preventing common skin problems. Your skin is your first indicator of your overall health and it’s important to monitor it for changes and take great care of it!
The Largest Organ
When we think of organs, we usually think of things like the heart or kidneys that are inside our bodies. However your skin is actually the largest organ of your body! It manufactures Vitamin D which helps convert calcium for your bones, prevents infection with antibacterial substances and is a waterproof and insulating shield. It also acts as a sensor to connect your brain to the world.
Build a Routine
Building a skincare routine can be tricky with so many options available, but by sticking to some simple steps you can experiment with products to find which works for you.
There are three steps to a great skin care routine:
- Cleansing – Washing Your Skin, the most basic step to remove impurities and dirt from your daily environment. You should wash morning and night to avoid clogged pores.
- Toning – Balancing Your Skin, an optional step that can be done after cleansing to assist other products to penetrate the skin. As toners can sometimes exfoliate, you can tone only at night or perhaps every other day.
- Moisturizing – Hydrating and Softening, the final step to seal in moisture and keep your skin hydrated. It is recommended that you use a moisturizer year round, and you can use different product for different seasons to get the biggest benefits.
As you age, you will need to adjust your products to suit your changing skin. You should use products once or twice a day for at least six weeks to see results, if after this time you see no benefit, try something else!
